In our first part of how to read your website's stats in Google Analytics, we covered the number of sessions, duration of sessions and bounce rate on your website. In Part 2 we'll cover:

  • The number of pages per session, and

The average number of pages per session is two.

Of course, we all think the content on our websites is awesome and folks should spend their valuable time perusing it. But in reality, the average number of pages someone looks at on a website is two.

Bottom line is: if you want visitors to go to more than one or two pages, you need to make your content more helpful and pertinent to what they're looking for. As a Columbus web design company, we want our expertise to come across. We want to showcase our knowledge base to increase confidence in our abilities.

There are reasons for folks just going to one or two pages. They could be:

  • Looking at a blog post
  • Signing up for an e-newsletter
  • Signing up for an event, or
  • Looking at a specific product or service you offer

The best way to get the page visits up is to have content that's truly helpful to your audience, and include cross links to other pages within your site that are relevant to the subject they're interested in.

Note: people who leave a page, then go back to it, is counted as two page views. As you can see form teh screen shot below, in Analytics, if you roll your cursor over the "Pages/Session" type (or any links in analytics, it gives you more detail.

In website's stats: the most important metric is conversions

Conversions can be any number of things,  need to be set up on your analytics so you can track them. Conversions could be:

  • Who fills out a Contact form
  • Who fills out a request to be on your e-newsletter list
  • How long someone is on your site, or
  • How many pages they've visited
